Staircase Cafe Theater -- Volunteer Information

As a grassroots community driven performance facility, The Staircase would not exist without its volunteers. We cannot thank you enough for your interest in volunteering. Over the last decade countless volunteer hours have gone into construction projects, shows, lobbying, maintenance, and other essential tasks. It is this countless energy that makes The Staircase what it is. In fact this volunteer energy is exactly what The Staircase is.

We are going to make your volunteer hours with The Staircase count, literally. Log your volunteer hours and they will be kept track of and converted into volunteer treats. Logged volunteer hours will be more fun, and may lead to bon bons. Sign Me Up Now!

Why Log My Volunteer Hours?

Well all the cool volunteer programmes are doing it, and you don't have to. We appreciate anonymous volunteering as well. There are lots of other reasons to log your volunteer hours. First, volunteering helps The Staircase. Thank you. Second, it is fun, and can lead to you getting bon bons. Third, logging your volunteer hours gives The Staircase important data that we can use for things like grants, resource allocation, and academic research. Fourth logging volunteer hours to your team can get your team bon bons.

Personal Volunteering

You are a force of one. Don't think that any volunteering effort is too small. Pick something from our online job jar, or let us know what you would like to do. Everything comes from volunteers at The Staircase, even the next great idea.

Team Volunteering

Log volunteer hours for your team. Personal volunteering is pretty straight forward. Do some work, log some hours, get famous. Log your hours with a team and watch the cumulative effort start to shine. Teams could be rewarded with bon bons like: reduced rental rate, preferred scheduling, or team merchandise. Logging your volunteer hours with a team allows groups of volunteers to help support the specific part of The Staircase that they love, in addition to the whole project.

If you are being lent a gifting membership by some generous person or corporation it is possible that you may not be able to choose which team you are donating your hours to. This is a quirk of the system.

Volunteer Job Jars

Volunteer jobs are divided into three job jars: the Everyday Job Jar, the Big Deal Job Jar, and the Job Job Jar (not jar jar binks). Call (905.529.3000) or email (info@staircase.org) us if you see something you would like to do. If you have a particular job you would like to volunteer let us know. We will be emailing out needed jobs in our fortnight email update.

Everyday Job Jar

The Everyday Job Jar is the most important one of all. These are the tasks that need a little attention every single day, and these are the jobs that keeps The Staircase running. Below is a sampling of everyday jobs.

  • Mowing the lawn
  • Shoveling Snow
  • Raking Leaves
  • Outdoor Garbage Detail
  • Alphabetize Letter Box
  • Mopping
  • Ticket Taking

Big Deal Job Jar

Big deal jobs are much more complicated than everyday jobs, and require the co-ordination of multiple volunteers. Big deal jobs often require detailed planning and even project management.

  • Loft Washroom Installation
  • Parking Lot, Pave and Curb
  • Installing Loft Offices
  • Theatre Sound Proofing
  • Upgrading Projection System
  • Upgrade Theatre Lighting
  • Paint Damaged Walls

Job Job Jar

There are several volunteer jobs that The Staircase needs. Typically they occupy about 10 hours per week of work, and require at least one meeting a month with the team. These volunteer jobs are applied for, and do require an enormous amount of work. With great power comes great responsibility.

  • Executive Director - Responsible for vision, mission and operations.
  • Rentals Manager - Arranges all aspects of rentals.
  • Volunteer Manager - Advocates for and organizes volunteers.
  • Membership Manager - Advocates for and maintains membership.
  • Marketing Manager - Viral marketing, calendar, email and signage.
  • Maintenance Manager - Maintains building and grounds.
